Belmont, MA – March 20, 2012 – Haddad Hakansson LLC of Belmont, MA has been awarded “Best Of Remodeling” 2012 by Houzz, the leading online platform for residential remodeling and design. The firm, established in 2001, was chosen by the more than 1.2 million registered members of the Houzz community.

The Houzz “Best Of Remodeling” award for 2012 is given in two categories: Customer Satisfaction and Design. Customer Satisfaction award winners are based on homeowner members who rated their experience working with remodeling professionals in 12 categories ranging from architects, and interior designers to contractors and other residential remodeling professionals. Design award winners’ work was the most popular among the 1.2 million members, also known as “Houzzers,” who saved more than 16.5 million professional images to their personal ideabooks via the Houzz site and iPad/iPhone app.

Opposite the window end of the unit exists a long wall that acts as the hallway from the front door to the bathroom and bedroom at the opposite end. The majority of the wall is exposed to the great room comprised of the kitchen, dining area, and living room. These three spaces form a loft-style rectangle. With the views from the windows on one end, the blank wall needed something just as spectacular.

Living in The Big Apple – Part 2

There is a thrill in acquiring multi-functional, beautiful pieces for the loft-style condo. For example, take this Indonesian cabinet. Not only is it compact and sports beautiful details, it serves as a bar and cocktail serving station. As you can see, wine is stored below. But, the cabinet door is hinged on the bottom with 90 degree stops, providing easy access to the supplies located directly in the cabinet while providing counter space for the mixologist at heart.

On the left side of the photo is an additional cabinet. When the two doors are opened, a full desk setup is revealed. Here’s a closer look.

Working in a smaller space is both challenging and thrilling. We love to work in New York City and love to develop a space to its maximum potential. There are many positive elements to this loft-style space: new construction, high ceilings, ample storage, and walls of glass. Ironically, while lots of windows are an asset, we were left with little space for furniture and art and very little privacy. Living with no window treatments for a while, the client enjoyed the view of The Empire State Building along one wall of the living room, but it was the other wall that afforded no view other than the condo’s balcony and adjacent apartments. We needed to think outside the box for the perfect complement. Upon our first visit we quickly realized that no window treatments were not an option, but, while heavy draperies would add drama to the space and afford the needed privacy, they would close out the light and diminish any of the good views. The solution became clear. Using a dual-sided, motorized, sheer shading system, we were able to maintain views of the skyline while providing privacy within the apartment. The sable/charcoal color scheme of the shades blended perfectly with Benjamin Moore’s Fairview Taupe accent wall in the living room and bedroom. The custom cornice board was made of the same shading fabric, hiding the motorization and giving the product a tailored look.

In the bedroom, the wall of glass measures 12′ wide by 8′ high. Again, while letting in beautiful light, the lack of privacy became paramount. Using a Duette Duolite™ Shade from Hunter Douglas provided the best of both worlds. Duolite™ feature offers maximum light control by using two separate fabric panels to achieve a ‘day/night’ level of convenience, providing limitless options for privacy and light control.

In the Master Bedroom our goal was to be as clean and simple as possible. With white marble floors, a white bed, and just a little punch of color from the upholstered chair and art work, this bedroom is peaceful and serene.

The Pool

Here we are at the end of our tour. The pool and grounds took a particularly hard beating from a hurricane several years ago.
Replanting, combined with natural regrowth, has brought the forest back to it’s lush grandeur. The pool area took a lot more hands-on work. The same coral tile that was used throughout the patio area of the house was also used to surround the pool. Whether basking in the sun on a chaise, shaded under a market umbrella, or floating in the pool, this quite secluded oasis is steps from the house and offers the perfect spot to relax.
