A Great Day at the Wellesley Kitchen Tour

Thanks to the Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club for including one of our projects on this year’s Wellesley Kitchen Tour!

This popular annual event showcases six beautiful local homes and their kitchens every year. This time the WHJWC raised $45,000 in a span of four hours – and every penny will go back to the community.

The event takes a nearly year to plan and is professionally run by dedicated volunteers. The Haddad Hakansson team enjoyed getting to know them through this process.

We also had fun meeting and greeting the Tour goers, and a couple of us even got to check out the other beautiful homes.

We appreciate our wonderful clients for opening their home to this event. And thanks to Brody for letting us show off his custom dog dishes to a bunch of strangers. We know he was happy to get them back!

Come see us Saturday at the Wellesley Kitchen Tour!

We are so excited to have one of our kitchen designs included in this Saturday’s Wellesley Kitchen Tour!

The tour runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes six homes, including the one at 172 Hampshire Road in Wellesley that features a kitchen, powder room and interior designed by Haddad Hakansson.

The spacious and classic layout, the powder room with a dramatic black ceiling and the built in dog dishes are a few of the many highlights of the space.

Wellesley Townsman article about the tour last week shared details and photographs of the kitchen, and included interviews with Mark Haddad and Susan Cracraft of Haddad Hakansson.

The Wellesley Kitchen Tour is one of the biggest fundraisers for the Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club. The WHJWC raises $140,000 annually and gives every penny back to the community. Purchase tickets here.

We hope you can make it and if you can, please come say hello to Mark, Kurt and Susan!

Instant Drama: Painting Your Ceilings Black

An article this weekend on Houzz.com listed 11 reasons to paint your celing black. Reader feedback was somewhat mixed (“Love the photos but I am not that brave” was one of the top comments) but we love the look!

And we’ve done it ourselves:

Powder Room with Black Ceiling

In this client’s powder room, we paired a black ceiling with ivory and white Graham and Brown wallpaper (Pattern: Vintage Flock). The crystal petite chandelier positively sparkles against the Benjamin Moore Twilight Zone ceiling.

The black ceiling works for a number of reasons.

Most importantly, the client loves this look and has many black and white accents in the nearby kitchen. In addition, the wallpaper and ceiling add a bit of unexpected drama to a room with beautiful but neutral finish choices.

The black ceiling connects the wallpaper with the rest of the room and makes the design feel finished. The tall creamy wainscoting keeps the combination from feeling oppressive. A bold choice yes, but one that makes a lot of sense!

Here are a few of our favorite examples from the Houzz article:

Reason No. 2: To Emphasize Trim.  Stunning!

Reason No. 3: To Make a Ceiling Look Lower. This room would look completely different with a plain ceiling.

Reason No. 5: To add drama. The tall curtains and black ceiling make up for too-low windows and boring architecture.

Reason No. 9: To define an area. What an ingenious way to add visual interest to an open floor plan.

“Best of Houzz 2013” Awards: Thank You Clients!

badge_7_2We are honored to announce that for the second straight year, Haddad Hakansson has been selected for a “Best of Houzz” award.

The “Best of Houzz 2013” awards were granted in two categories: “Design” and “Customer Satisfaction.” This year’s award was given in the “Customer Satisfaction” category and was based on a variety of factors, including ratings and reviews by Houzz’s 11 million monthly users.

Here is a sample of what our clients had to say about us on Houzz in 2012:

My experience working with a handful of other designers on kitchen and bath renovations helped me realize just how outstanding Haddad Hakansson designers are. They earned 5 stars with professionalism, exciting and fresh ideas, color expertise, and attention to schedule and budget constraints. I won’t work with anyone else.”

  • Houzz user Joanna K., Client

“I found them to really listen to my “wish list” and was very impressed in how they creatively included them all into a very small space.  They were a delight to work with and made a very stressful project an enjoyable one with their attention to detail and quick response to all my changes.

I would highly recommend Mark & Kurt to anyone with design needs.”

Interior PhotosHaddad Hakansson’s 2012 award was given in the “Design” category, and was based on the number of images added to Houzz users’ “ideabooks.” Fewer than 1 percent of the 32,597 interior design professionals profiled on Houzz have won “Best of Houzz” awards in both 2012 and 2013.

The Floor Beneath Your Feet

The Floor Beneath Your Feet: Carpet, Hardwood, or Tile?

What kind of flooring should you invest in during your home remodel? Carpet, hardwood and tile tend to be common choices for a few reasons:

Carpet – Carpet flooring is known for creating a much softer look than hardwood or tile, and  it provides actual thermal resistance, meaning it retains warm air longer (an energy conservation benefit).

Additional benefits to carpet include the thousands of styles and colors available, softening of slips and falls – especially toddlers and older individuals and absorption of noise from TVs, phones, computers, etc.

The downsides? Dirt and dust can be easily trapped in carpet, which can aggravate allergies and make it difficult to clean. To properly maintain carpet and keep the dirt/dust low, homeowners should have it professionally cleaned approximately every 6 months.

Hardwood Floors – Hardwood floors can be a beautiful addition to the home that is much easier to stand on and typically less expensive than tile. As About.com shares, hardwood floors are easy to maintain and a fantastic value (hardwood flooring can literally last hundreds of years). They can be kept clean with sweeping and, occasionally, wood floor cleaner.

Hardwood floors also come in a wide variety of colors and styles. In addition to types of wood like oak, cherry and walnut, there are a wide variety of hardwood types like solid hardwood, engineered flooring or laminate (San Jose Hardwood Floors explains the differences on their blog).

The cons of hardwood flooring? It can be a costly option, depending on the type you choose, and can become even more expensive as it needs to be installed over sub-flooring. It also needs refinishing occasionally (more often if it’s a softer wood) and can make a home sound noisy as it helps the sound bounce around the room.

Tile – A great option for those with pets, tile is durable, easy to clean and maintain, and great to use with radiant floor heating (especially in a bathroom). Building Your Green Home also shares that tile is a great non-toxic flooring to use in your home.

Although many people think of tile as “bathroom only” floor, it’s actually great all over the house! It isn’t damaged by water, making it great for the kitchen too, and it’s considered eco-friendly because it’s made with clay, shale or recycled glass.

The drawbacks to tile include feeling colder on your feet (unless it’s used with radiant floor heating), being easier to chip or break, feeling less comfortable to stand on for long periods of time and making the room sound noisier than a carpet would.
